Built by a practicing attorney

Infrastructure for the
Agentic Law Firm

Matterbase is a project built to equip solo/small law firms to leverage AI for their entire business, not just legal work. Lawyer operators need practical infrastructure designed to integrate law firm operations with legal services.

Austin Young · Current Counsel

An agentic law firm is a law firm that optimizes coordination between human lawyers and AI agents.

01 / The integration problem

An agentic law firm cannot rely on a human lawyer to be the integration layer.

Most lawyers constantly fly between tech tools, collecting and updating information to make their work possible.

Label, copy, open tool, paste, record, file, attach, drag/drop, prompt, etc.

Most of today’s lawyers act as the integration layer for their practice. They carry the mental load and burden of aggregating and maintaining client/matter information across all of their software tools.

Lawyers cannot effectively delegate work to AI agents if they are performing this function. They should not have to draft a multi-paragraph prompt with five attachments in order to get quality output from AI tools.

An integration layer has two jobs: maintain complete context for client work, and carry supported actions back into the practice’s tools so that everything stays up to date and in sync.

02 / A shared foundation

An agentic law firm requires infrastructure that aggregates and updates matter records and context in real time.

Email, documents, matter activity, and supported records feed a queryable chronicle. Context derives from the connected record rather than a static profile someone must maintain.

Work on the same matter

AI agents Assigned, bounded work using authorized context.
Custom tools Purpose-built workflows using the same foundation.
The lawyer directs and reviews the work. Matterbase connects the context and supported actions underneath it.
01 / CONTEXT

Persistent context

The next workflow can use the connected matter record. The lawyer does not have to assemble the same background for each new request.

02 / EXECUTION

Supported execution

Selected workflows can label, file, create records, or return results to connected tools within defined permissions.

03 / OWNERSHIP

Firm-owned foundation

The firm owns its data and can evolve its tools and providers. Agents access supported capabilities; familiar legal artifacts such as Word remain part of the work.

Matterbase is a working project developed in Austin’s practice. Availability in other firms depends on supported integrations and deployment readiness.

03 / Work differently

Leverage a shared foundation for practical operations, reliable automations and agentic workflows that scale.

Here are just a few examples that demonstrate how Matterbase streamlines a legal practice.

Foundational Operations — Intake/Conflicts/Onboarding

Follow the steps that turn an inquiry into an active matter. Matterbase connects intake, conflicts, and onboarding around the matter record, with the lawyer directing the process.

Basic Automation — The Little Things

Small, repeatable operations are part of the foundation. This example explores automation around everyday practice tasks, using connected matter information and supported actions.

Live Context vs. Connections

Connecting a tool is only part of the work. This example explores how the shared matter record gives a workflow relevant background, rather than requiring the lawyer to assemble that context again.

About me.

My name is Austin Young. About a year ago, I left a large law firm to start a solo corporate/M&A practice in Texas called Current Counsel.

At the time, the idea of an “AI-native” law firm was a new and vague concept. In my view, the focus was largely on how legal services can be turned into a product or set of products. Instead, I set out to build what I thought it should look like: a human lawyer (or lawyers), empowered by AI, to provide legal services. I thought it should look more like Ironman than iRobot.

I quickly learned that using (or even building) AI tools for legal work and integrating AI tools across a legal practice are two very different things. My “Ironman” vision required a level of integration that I could not buy from a software company. It also required a level of technical understanding that I did not get from law school.

Ultimately, I realized that I needed to evolve as a lawyer. The evolution is deeper than simply learning new tools or even “vibe coding” my own. It goes beyond the legal work itself.

The brutal reality is that the value proposition for attorneys is shifting. We can no longer assume that the time spent on a project is a good measure of its value. Of course, human lawyers are indispensable for any serious legal work. But clients will soon refuse to pay attorneys to spend time doing tasks that they know AI can handle (or at least make much more efficient).

Building a legal practice that can properly utilize AI agents/tools is ultimately an engineering project with a critical human element. There is an opportunity for lawyers that are willing to rethink how they provide legal services to their clients. There is an opportunity to evolve into what the future of legal practice could be.

Matterbase is the beginning of this evolution for me and my practice.

Many lawyers can see the writing on the wall, but it is hard to know where to start. Let’s do it together.

Explore what’s next

Let’s talk.

Matterbase began in my own practice. I’m exploring how it could be useful to other lawyers and firms. Tell me what interests you, what you’re working on, and where you could use support.

I’m also considering leading a small cohort of lawyers learning and building together, with practical guidance and Matterbase as a starting point. If that interests you, or you have another direction in mind, I’d like to hear from you.

How would you like to get involved?

Select any that interest you. These are directions we’re exploring, not currently available offers.
